We are excited to announce that we are now serving in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania! Partnering with Productive Lives and Cornerstone Community Church, two ministries already well-established in that area, we will focus our work in two sections of the city, namely, Kensington and South Philly. Cam Garven, head of Productive Lives and long-time volunteer and mission leader of World Servants, has been serving in Kensington with his church and family for many years. He, along with Joe Darrow and Andy Schultz, who have been pastors for more than 20 years, will be our community leaders. Opportunities abound for rehabbing homes/outreach buildings, food distribution, and outreaches to the neighborhood. Our hope is to mobilize teams that desire to serve people in need.

The intention of World Servants is to bring a “hand up” and a message of hope. Needs in the community can range from leaking roofs, homes needing insulation, and families struggling to provide the basic necessities, as the majority of the population lives below the poverty line.

Teams will learn about and come alongside the community to improve living conditions, opening doors to share Jesus and help provide basic needs like food. The majority of the mission week or weekend will be spent on building renovations for ministry and outreach purposes. Projects can include demo, constructing a wheel chair ramp, building a deck, painting, general clean up around the properties, and installing vinyl siding, windows and doors.

Team members will participate in several outreach events, which offer opportunities to interact with the community and build relationships. Groups will spend time doing Block Parties, outreach for children in the local parks, helping in the food pantry, or whatever the community leadership team decides.

There are no trips available at this time.

Participants are expected to provide transportation to and from the mission site, as well as travel between the housing site, work projects, outreach activities and the day-off event.

Teams will stay at Cornerstone Community Church in Kensington, PA, and will be sleeping on floors, so twin size air mattresses or cots are needed. Showers and restroom facilities are available. Electricity and hot water are available. Meals are prepared by local cooks.

Week long trip includes a day-off with several options available. There are both free and fee-based local activities, such as exploring Philadelphia.

Trip safety is extremely important to World Servants and our host community. The community we are working and staying in is considered very safe and we do not anticipate any safety issues.

COVID-19 Safety Response

We are working diligently to address the directives of the communities we serve in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Obviously, there will be adjustments as World Servants is mainly a high touch relational organization and we will be restrained from many of our normal practices in serving together. To start we are having each person traveling with us complete a survey with questions concerning travel and illness related to COVID-19. Our plan during the trip is to make sure each person wears masks daily as we are serving in community and daily temperature checks will be administered. While social distancing will be a challenge, we will brainstorm ways we can focus on the task at hand while staying a safe distance from each other.

World Servants will also be working with our partner communities to determine when and how we can serve to protect them as well as our volunteers. Each community may look different in terms of how volunteers can serve that will make a difference.

We will continue to update all our stakeholders as governments, communities, and travel opens around the world.
